African Kingdom Released!

Released today is the African Kingdom, the first free content expansion for Glory of Rome.

What's The African Kingdom?

The African Kingdom is a brand new campaign set in North Africa. You take control of a newly appointed regional administrator. It's your job to grow these lands and turn it into an economic powerhouse for Rome. You'll play through a series of 8 Scenarios in this campaign, each of which focusing on a different area of city building in this new land.

Much like the Roman campaign you'll unlock each scenario one at a time. Each of them gets harder, ramping up in difficulty, requiring you to manage even more buildings, resources and dwelling upgrades.

New Citizens

The Tribesman and Tribal Nobles are the African locals and are adept at creating a wide range of resources. You'll create these new citizens under the Residential building menu and just like their Roman equivalents they require their own resources and civic buildings to flourish.

These citizens work in their own building chains, they won't take part in Roman industry. You'll be using these citizens for all of the new buildings in this expansion.

New Industries & Resources

The African province has provided the empire with a wealth of resources. The Senate requires goods and it's your job to acquire them.

As part of the campaign you'll construct a series of new buildings. These buildings will be used in the extraction and refinement of trade goods.

There's a total of 10 new resources in the campaign, along with the original Roman resources.

Here's the Ivory Crafters that crafts raw Ivory into Refined Ivory. You can also see the Parchment Maker who created Parchment from Dried Papyrus.

Two Cultures - One Empire

A key challenge you will face in this campaign is that unlike the original Roman campaign, you need to balance the requirements of two distinct cultures. To create the goods Rome requires you will need a range of citizens and that means catering to a range of resource and civic service requirements.

While the campaign focused on the Africans, you'll still need to take care of your original Roman citizens to supply Rome with their resources!

New Civic Requirements

Your African citizens are an entirely separate culture. To that end these citizens need their own civic services to encourage growth. As part of the campaign you will create buildings that provide African Culture and African Religion.

The African locals only have 2 passive requirements unlike the Romans who need a range of services for their middle and high income citizen. While they only have 2 requirements, they require much more to be satisfied (you'll have to wait while it slowly accumulates or build multiple buildings to amply their effect)

Here we can see a range of civic buildings, each of which has their own cost, maintenance and employment requirements.

Brand New Maps

From the vast desertscape of the Sahara to the coast and even an oasis, you'll see a range of new maps for this campaign. I'm really happy with how these maps turned out and excited to see the settlements you'll create on them!

Updated Roman Buildings

Being farm from home, your Roman buildings have undergone a makeover. All of the Roman buildings use regional specific colors, shrubs and trees. They work well together with the new tribal buildings while still maintaining their Roman style.

Additional Highlights

Here's some additional things that are pretty exciting and come with this new release.

The Tribal Exchange

The African populous don't use warehouses or food storage yards like the Romans. They have a single large trading hub called the Tribal Exchange. This exchange acts as a one stop shop for all African resources. Unlike a normal warehouse, the building accepts deliveries from industries and actively uses it's workers to collect from surrounding areas. This is a great building to have at your city center so your citizens can easily get the goods they require

(note, it only stores African resources so wont be used by your Roman citizens)

Steam Achievements

A range of new achievements are coming for the African Kingdom. Most of these involve building specific buildings, collecting X number of resources and overall creating a solid settlement for your citizens.

Additional achievements and refinements are coming following this release to streamline the experience.

Updated Sandbox Mode

Following this release, additional maps will be released for Sandbox mode. When selecting these African maps, you will have access to both the Roman and African gameplay, the same as you've experienced in the campaign. This will be scheduled in for late Feb.

What's Next?

After this release will be a series of additional tweaks and changes to help balance out the scenarios. I'd love to hear from you guys if you manage to give this new campaign a go and if you create some cities you can upload them via the "Screenshots" section of Steam.

Hope you guys enjoy the new campaign!
