We first wanted to thank everyone who has already purchased GUMBALL DRIFT and helped support it's development on the HTC Vive with Steam VR. We're humbled by the positive response that we've already received, even from players who are still waiting to receive their Vives and Rifts!
We've been following closely to the feedback and comments that you all have made, and it appears to us that we have made a regrettable miscalculation in our development.
During the late stages of our development of GUMBALL VR, we received what is now the retail versions of Vive and Rift hardware. It was decided that in consideration to the enclosed nature of the headsets, and due in part to the potential discomfort of long term VR gaming sessions, it made more sense to focus on a shorter, less directed game play and offer all of the game content available on first play. With this in mind we removed the progression mode that we had designed, as well as unlock all vehicles in the game.
After watching gamers, steamers, journalists, and enthusiasts immerse themselves in VR for the first time over the past two days, it became clear that there was one overwhelming complaint, VR games are too short. Luckily, we had already designed GUMBALL with career based progression from the start, so re-implementing it would not be a massive chore.
We hope to get you this semi-major game update completed as quickly as possible, so that you may experience GUMBALL DRIFT as we had originally intended with a career-based progression mode. Like many things happening right now in VR, we are learning and iterating as we go, so we hope that you will understand when we don't get it right the first time around. Regardless, we hope that you continue to support our development and give us feedback so that we may bring to you an engaging and unique VR game experience.
