Patch 0.9.2 - New card types, relics, lore and UI improvements!



Demo update v0.9.2 is perhaps the biggest update yet! I'm very happy with how the game is advancing as I'm preparing towards NextFest October! Hopefully the game gets its much needed bump then!

Although the game is progressing at a rapid pace, and I've been developing the game for 5 years now, I'm not sure if It'll be ready by November for the scheduled full release. Instead of delaying, I am considering releasing the game as 1.0 early access, which would still allow you all the option to support development and play around with the other classes, biomes and campaigns that are currently locked.

NEW CARD TYPES



With this patch comes the introduction of new card types and subtypes.
Elements and skills will remain the most common card types and will still work the same. The new card types allows me to make more interesting relics and abilities and allows you to make decks and combat that more unique.



  • Modifier: Modifiers are a new card type that can be added to most abilities. They allow you to change something small about the ability, such as how strong the ability is, how much mana they cost, and changing the shape of the ability.
  • Trigger: Triggers are a new card type that do something when drawn. For example: A card that transforms into a random card when drawn, or a card that draws more cards when drawn.
  • Consumable: Items that can be used in combat are now marked with the consumable subtype. Subtypes have a little icon at the bottom of the card, in this case, an apple. Consumable cards are destroyed when used. Other cards go in to the discard pile, which can now be viewed as well.
  • Unlocked: The Unlocked subtype has been added to cards meant to be used to open up a blocked part of the level. Besides being now marked with a little key symbol, these cards can always be removed from the deck when needed.
  • Singular: The singular subtype has a purple square icon and denotes that the card can only be used once per combat.
  • Temporary: Temporary cards have a little hourglass icon. They are tokens that disappear after being used, discarded or when combat ends.

Many of these new relics will introduce the new card types and/or modify your deck in different ways. Additionally, the following relics have been reworked: Heart Container, Metabolism, Picnic Basket, Rations relics as well as Greed and Hoarder curse.

There is also now a relic affinity system, that slightly increases the chance to find similar relics that match the strategies of the relics you picked up before. Examples of such strategies are: bombs; gaining armor; or using consumables.

Campaign & Lore



  • Great Giant campaign of creating new paths has been reworked. It now destroys giant rocks and mountains to open up new paths and unlock levels.
  • Great Giant boss fight has new particle effects, dialogue, small visual upgrade and more abilities, including a passive ability.
  • Updated the death particle effect and sound for bosses.
  • Updated dialogue system: Saves how many times dialogue was encountered to reduce or skip repeat dialogue.
  • Boss music has been changed.
  • Added the ability for bosses to have more than 4 abilities.
  • Added Shrines as a random interest spawn (blue minimap dot). Shrines are dedicated to a specific god and its attribute. Using them gives you some lore and +1 to that attribute to all heroes.
  • Added lore to virtue (manatype) descriptions.
  • Added lore to class descriptions.

Biomes



New mechanics have been added for the mountain pass biome but do not yet spawn naturally. The volcano biome has many newly added rooms and puzzles.

  • Added many new blockades to the Volcano biome.
  • Added solution rooms to the Volcano biome where you can find pickaxes, fire, earth and ruin cards.
  • Mountain pass blocks have been visually improved.
  • Cairns and Pit columns have been added as biome unique objects.
  • You can now Push blocks into pits to walk over them.
  • Rooms can be designated to only spawn vertically.
  • New card uses for Earth, Might, Body and Shape cards to mess around with rocks and boulders.


UI & Input Improvements



  • While dragging a card, shows a preview of what ability you'll get if adding that card.
  • New spell description icons.
  • Blocked and solution room icons are removed from minimap when solved.
  • Shows a new direction indicator if a new area has opened up off-screen.
  • Added a new UI for hiring wandering heroes, that shows their stats and cards.
  • Improved aiming with ball- and wall-shaped abilities, especially when 2 or 4 tiles large, where the center tile would be unclear.
  • Improved the status effect UI for large creatures.
  • Now shows a red/green light on windmills if activating them is needed to trigger something else.
  • Added a new interaction cursor, a grabbing hand, shown over all interactable objects.
  • Added a visual indicator for throwing range, casting range, and jumping pad range.
  • Added an alternate use button (R and right click by default), which can be used to throw objects as opposed to putting them down gently.
  • Added the ability to rotate mirrors without moving them.
  • You can now rotate your character by holding down right-mouse button.
  • Clicking on your hero also puts an object down gently.
  • You can now jump ledges with just the mouse.
  • Updated character creation UI with better class selection and separated screens for customization and starting stats.
  • Improve Light theme text readability.
  • Added a text cursor to text fields.
  • Text is now centralized per row (instead of per text).
  • UI Confirm button (Enter by default) can be used on most screens and popups to pick the default confirmation option.
  • A proper error message now pops up when loading a faulty save.
  • Hovering over UI elements hides the level object selector.
  • Added a warning for having not enough coins at a shop pedestal.
  • Added a message to boss walls and boss levels when standing next to them, that explains how to unseal them.
  • Various map editor UI improvements.
  • Better saving of which tiles are explored.
  • Added damage type description to abilities inside the encyclopedia.
  • Changed keybindings so it auto-assign new shortcuts to existing keybinding configurations.




Other changes


  • Can re-enter old levels when playing on Adventure Mode difficulty.
  • Knight and Barbarian have been moved around. Knight is now the default unlocked class for new profiles.
  • Started attributes for each class have been re-balanced.
  • Harmony mana now recovers life when spent.
  • Removed enemy mana in combat.
  • Wood can be burnt on a campfire.
  • Reflect ability (REFLECTION) and its status effect are implemented.
  • Renamed "Glinter" ability (ALERT+LIGHT) to "Glare".
  • Tutorial is now disabled when finishing it with 5 stars.
  • Resolve is now a status effect with its own icon, sound and particle effects.
  • Added new slime enemies to the map editor.
  • Handmade levels such as the tutorial and great giant level, are now serialized and stored in a separate folder.




Bugfixes


  • Fixed a crash when loading nonexistent cards/relics. They are logged now instead.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when using Morph relic on an empty ability slot.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur by the "Slow" spell.
  • Fixed a rare crash that could happen when glitched party member is being shown in the UI.
  • Fixed a rare crash that could occur if max mana reached 0.
  • Fixed a soft-lock where the player could be stuck in game-over screen if losing while inspecting enemy abilities.
  • Fixed a soft-lock where using the Steal ability could cause the enemy to get stuck.
  • Fixed a lag spike related to Large creatures having status effects.
  • Fixed certain crashes that could occur with console commands.
  • Fixed a glitch where an overworld level selector could get de-synced, causing a new level to be generated every time.
  • Fixed a bug where one couldn't use the main ability for the rest of the level after picking up relic.
  • Fixed a bug where lifted objects when thrown could glitch through certain objects.
  • Fixed a bug where mirrors would not reflect light over shovel holes and rabbit burrows.
  • Fixed a bug where coins were not picked up when jumping between stepping stones.
  • Fixed a bug where Hoarder curse would not lock cards inside the deck and nerfed it to 25% odds.
  • Fixed a bug where heroes could apply negative status effects on allies.
  • Fixed a bug where pressing Enter to confirm would close the screen when typing in a text-box.
  • Fixed a bug where you could sometimes not enter a level in the overworld by mouse click.
  • Fixed a bug where a skill card could disappear when placed inside the Anvil.
  • Fixed a bug where aimed casting would be toggled by canceling to drag a card, if both inputs were bound to the same key.
  • Fixed a visual bug where clicking on an adjacent non-solid object (such as a switch) would rotate the hero to the south.
  • Fixed a visual bug where the player could move one square when previewing the world map from inside the level.
  • Fixed a visual bug where resizing the screen would set the vertical offset too high.
  • Fixed a visual bug with pedestals inside the Great Giant boss level.
  • Fixed a visual bug where when using cheat mode, creatures jumping out of water would sometimes be see-through.
  • Fixed a visual bug in the animation of unlocking a locked chain.
  • Fixed a visual bug where a card picked up in combat had its location offset before entering the hand.
  • Fixed a visual bug that could occur when two cards in a row were rapidly added to an ability.
  • Fixed a visual bug where one of the tutorial messages was shown at the wrong moment.
  • Fixed a visual bug where a disabled icon button would show its text as a text button.
  • Fixed an audial bug where the Boss music would stutter before looping.
  • Fixed an audial bug where music would not change back to title screen music when finished with tutorial.
