In short
Exploration & experiments with ancient versions!
List of changes
Valo City- Fine-adjusted area limit barriers, to pull the sunk ones out of the ground, suck out the magic from the ones with dreams of flight, and to close the gaps of teased false freedoms!
- Fixed a case of pedestrians ignoring very dangerous incoming player cars.
Misc- Added a console command for mass-converting .ptx files.
- Full-screen overlay support for Photo Mode/Camera Rails - you can load them by filename via console.
- Very silly cheat for first person mode, that shall be left up to you to discover :)
- Further work on the mystery feature mentioned last week.
SL'Rchaeology!
SL1R is all based on the final version of SL1, but
newer isn't always
better!
We took a few days to better explore older versions of Street Legal and it's files, to check for any regressions, and to see what we could offer as optional features in the future;
A surprising amount of people never installed the patches, and will remember parts of the game differently, and it's best if SL1R offers them the option to re-experience them as they did years and years ago!
A great example of big change over time is the Test Track, which started out as a much-simpler location, and got some notable changes in almost every patch!
We got SL1R to load one of these older Test Track versions, but we'll leave these as something to release post-launch, not to delay the game, as they require some serious work.
Here are some other differences found in some older versions, that you might find interesting! :)
- Different, less-sharp loading screens.
- Slightly transparent water in Valo, hence modeled ground underwater!
- No BlueCat busses, though the bus stations were already there. No taxis, nor firetrucks, either!
- Valo had a few more grassy blocks open to exploration.
- Only 15 colors to choose from (only the last 3 pages of the final version, also seen in SLRR).
- Unlimited stickies.
- You could scratch the car in the garage by bumping it with the camera.
- Chain link fence and a grassy field of trees surrounded the Car Dealer.
- There are a lot of unused baked shadow textures, mostly for the suburb area. The oldest version of the Test Track retained it's baked shadows, even outside of the hangar area!
- No skidmarks, nor unique surface properties.
- Of course, a lot of things were just unfinished in one way or another, and this is just scratching the surface, and completely skipping various technical differences!
"So, what does all this mean for SL1R?"While most of what's listed above isn't news to us, we should've been armed with better knowledge of the game's history from the start, and while this adventure likely won't change much for the final product besides some small details, it's good to know exactly what the players of the older versions are used to seeing!
Can't deny that it's also simply interesting to have a deeper look at the development history! :)
