Development Update #4

Hello, soldiers!

Po4cupin3 here, but you can call me "Cupin." I'm next to have the honor of writing an update and introducing my role in War of Ashird's development! Specifically, I work for Kumiho Soft as a 3D environment artist.

Imagine an empty space without earth, trees, people, or objects—a place where there is nothing but darkness. I know it sounds scary, but we have tools to fill it in and create, so let's make a stage for WoA together!

First and foremost, I create a flat landscape that we'll be shaping minute-by-minute. Next, we need to focus on what we want to show; maybe it's mountains, maybe lakes, or maybe something entirely different. After this, when our landscape is done, we can look at it and hopefully say to ourselves, "Yes! It's nice and I'm satisfied, so we can move on to the next step: Objects."

Things like trees, buildings, and rocks are my "toys." Now I start imagining what I would like to put in different places, and what is necessary to play the game or finish a quest. I start placing everything, all the while asking myself one simple question: "Does it look nice?" If it does, I can start painting my world. I use textures with different materials, which I place as a layer on the ground. This way, I can make every kind surface—mountains, grass, sand, and so on.

From empty space to landscapes, objects create a real place where we can "live" and play as heroes. The whole process is, as I said, long—but it's incredibly satisfying to see things come together! When I did the last step, I could close my eyes, see everything in my mind's eye, and eventually see the same thing come together on my screen.

You might think it's over… but no, we're just getting started.

Why's that? Well, the answer is simple: I'm an artist—and each time I finish an environment, new ideas and new visions come to mind. I just know that this has to be on the map in order to make a living, breathing world.

That's what my work at Kumiho Soft is all about!.

If, someday, you have an opportunity to create something—and I'm not just talking about video games, but even easier things like painting, drawing, or writing—you should take it! Who knows, maybe you'll find the soul of an artist deep inside yourself? After all, the only thing stopping you is your imagination!

Next, I'd like to turn your attention to some character reveals.

Without further ado, introducing…

Tadahisa Shimazu

Mayumi's elder brother; Tadahisa had to be strong in order to protect his precious sister from the cruel, absurd world that stole their parents from them. To that end, he joined the military—and eventually became one of Ceredia's most formidable fighters. He's usually friendly and kind, but anyone who approaches his sister is treated like an enemy. If needed, he'll even slaughter them like he would an enemy on the battlefield—because that is the strength he worked so hard to attain…

Riku Ichijō

Once, there was a boy who said "Why don't you join the army if you wanna be popular, huh?" Riku took this question to heart and enrolled in Ceredia's military academy. There, his natural talent blossomed; he was promoted at an extraordinary pace and eventually took charge of Amsemel, a border city. Even now, however, the only thing the genius tactician doesn't have an answer for is this: "How do I become popular with women?"

What do you think about these two? As always, we'd love to hear your opinions!

Next, we'd like to show off our #1 3D model. Behold, Luna Rubrum!
